DURANGO, Colo. -Â Texas A&M International volleyball (2-5) closed out the Skyhawks Tournament with a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) over Lone Star Conference foe Western New Mexico (2-6) on Saturday.
Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina paced the Dustdevils with 17 kills as well as six digs, an ace and a block. Sophomore Sammantha Herrera posted eight kills, two blocks and a dig. Sophomore Allison Wade contributed 28 assists with four kills, three digs, a block and an ace.
TAMIU came out hot as they started the match with an 8-2 lead. They were able to keep the pressure on the Mustangs and eventually pushed their lead out to 19-10. WNMU really had no answer for the Dustdevils as they took the opening frame 25-16.
The Dustdevils continued their momentum in the second set with a 5-2 run to start. However, the Mustangs battled back and tied things at 6-6. WNMU was able to tie it three more times before TAMIU ran off on a 6-1 run to extend their lead back out to 14-9. However, the Mustangs kept grinding and managed to pull within one point late in the set at 23-22. The Dustdevils took the next two points to go up 2-0 with a 25-22 decision.
The third set saw TAMIU jump out to an early lead again at 3-1. Unfortunately, WNMU punched back and took their first lead of the match at 8-4 on a 7-1 run. With the momentum swinging toward the Mustangs, they were able to push the lead out to 17-12. However, the Dustdevils steadied themselves and slowly began to chip away at the deficit until they were only down two points at 22-20. TAMIU proceeded to close out the match on a 6-1 run to cap off the comeback and seal the victory with a 25-23 decision.Â
The Dustdevils will be back in action as they stay on the road with a trip to Tyler, Texas on Fri., Sept. 20 for a non-conference matchup against LSC foe UT Tyler.
