TAMIU falls to UT Tyler in straight sets

TYLER, Texas - Texas A&M International volleyball (2-6) fell 3-0 (19-25, 24-26, 19-25) to UT Tyler (6-3) on Friday.

Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils with 13 kills, in addition to five digs, a block and an ace. Sophomore Maison Kosse posted 22 assists with two digs, two aces, a block and a kill. Senior Hannah Semon contributed 11 digs with two assists and an ace.

TAMIU started hot as they opened the match on a 6-1 run. However, the Patriots quickly cooled their momentum with a 7-1 run to take the lead 8-7. The Dustdevils were able to rebound as they retook the lead 13-10. Unfortunately, UTT put the set out of reach with three separate runs, including a 7-1 run, to take the frame 25-19. 

The second set was tightly contested early with both sides trading points. However, the Patriots started to break away at 9-7. They increased their lead out to 18-14, but TAMIU raced back to tie things at 18-18. Things remained tight for the next several points, until UTT closed out the frame with three straight points to take a 26-24 decision.

After the break, UT Tyler continued their momentum as they started on a 5-0 run. The Dustdevils quickly answered with a 6-0 run of their own, taking the advantage 6-5. They would hold the lead until the Patriots rattled off a 7-0 run to take over 15-9. From there, both teams traded runs back and forth, but TAMIU was only able get within one point at 15-14 and again at 18-17. UTT took the victory by finishing on a 7-2 run to take a 25-19 decision.

The Dustdevils will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21 as they travel to Commerce, Texas to face off against No. 21 Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m.
