Dustdevils face second consecutive overtime match in showdown with Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Texas A&M International University men's soccer (3-0-1) settled for a 1-1 draw on the road against the Dixie State Trailblazers (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon from Trailblazer Stadium in St. George, Utah. 

Dixie State took the first two shots on goal of the match, but Dustdevil netminder Josh Jones turned away shots by John Joseph, at the 8:34 mark, and Idris Alabi at 13:33. 

Charlie Michel fired the first two shots for the Dustdevils. The second attempt was set up by found the back of the net and was set up by Sebastian Pena. Michel's shot beat Trailblazer goalkeeper Zach Nielson from 15 yards out. 

TAMIU tried to apply offensive pressure as midfielder Cem Igzec attempted a shot that sailed over the goal in the 31st minute and forward Nadav Datner had his shot stopped by Nielson in the 34th minute to send a 1-0 matchup into intermission.

In the 77th minute, the Trailblazers as Matt Lockwood headed in the equalizing goal on a feed from Carson Ecalono. 

Ruben Nielson tried to give the Dustdevils the lead again but his shot was stopped by Nielson in the 85th minute. The save set the stage for TAMIU's second overtime match in their last two matchups.

Within the first five minutes of the opening overtime period, Jones made a pair of key saves on shots by Joseph and Lockwood, respectively, to keep TAMIU in the game. Jay Vega took a shot with three seconds left but was just above the crossbar to send the game into the second overtime period.

The second overtime was a defensive stalemate as both teams did not surrender a single shot to cap off the 1-1 draw. 

Jones made a total of five saves while Nielson ended with six stops for the Trailblazers.

TAMIU held the advantage in shots (12-9) and shots on goal (7-6) while Dixie State led the way in corner kicks (4-2).

The Dustdevils will remain on the road and will travel to Odessa, Texas on Saturday, Sept. 21 for a non-conference matchup against Lone Star Conference foe, UT Permian Basin at 1 p.m.
