LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (0-1, 0-1 LSC) fell 9-4 in the season opener to UAFS (1-0, 1-0 LSC) on Friday.
The Lions got on the board first as a run scored on a wild pitch. A single to right field pushed the lead to 2-0. In the bottom half, the Dustdevils cut the lead to one as Andrew Holsey scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Jerry Villareal.
TAMIU tied it up in the second inning as Phillip Sanchez scored on a sacrifice fly to right field from Sergio Esqueda.
UAFS retook the lead 3-2 in the top of the third as a run scored on a sacrifice fly to center. They added to their lead with a three-run inning in the fifth. The first run scored on a double to left, with a run scoring on a sacrifice fly to center during the next at bat. The final run of the inning crossed on a single up the middle.Â
The Dustdevils cut into the deficit in the bottom of the sixth as Luis Flores scored on a Holsey single to center.Â
Unfortunately, the Lions pushed the lead back out to 9-3 in the top of the seventh. One run scored on a double to left center. Two runs scored on a hot shot single to left. In the bottom of the seventh, Sanchez cut the deficit to 9-4 as he touched home on a Paris Johnson single to right center.Â
UAFS' Drew Young earned the win in the decision. TAMIU's J.J. Sanchez took the loss.
The series will continue on Saturday at 1 p.m.
