Dustdevils Top Texas Woman's In Non-Conference Clash

DENTON, Texas – Texas A&M International (2-1, 1-1 LSC) used a 13-0 run between the late first quarter and mid second quarter to open a double digit lead and held on to defeat Texas Woman's (0-1, 0-0 LSC) 60-55 in non-conference play.
 
Both teams played a back-and-forth first quarter with the score limited to just 14-11. The Dustdevils used two three pointers and a total of four field goals to hold the slim margin.
 
Trailing 11-9 with 2:05 remaining, the Dustdevils used its 13-0 run, starting with a three pointer by freshman Hannah Dawson with 1:48 remaining in the first to go up by 11 with 6:41 remaining in the second.
 
Leading 31-25 at the half, the Dustdevils staved off a late 5-0 Pioneers run that cut the deficit to six. The Dustdevils shot 46% in the first half, but just 2-for-14 from three-point range. On the other hand, the Pioneers shot 31% from the floor and 22% from three.
 
Texas Woman's cut the deficit to just four after the third quarter and did so with an 8-0 run and by limiting the Dustdevils on offense. All three shots of the 3-for-14 shooting in the quarter for the Dustdevils came from behind the arc, where they shot 3-for-12.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Dustdevils reopened a nine-point lead at 50-41 with 6:36 remaining, but a 12-7 run by the Pioneers cut it back to two points with 56 seconds remaining. Down that final stretch the Dustdevils went 5-6 from the free-throw line to close out the victory.
 
Senior Patrycja Jaworska led the way with a team-high 11 points and added seven rebounds and four assists.
 
Senior Nicole Heyn and junior Bre DeLon scored 10 points each, while Heyn also added seven rebounds.
 
Graduate senior Jazmine Covington, junior Josselin Geer and freshman Silvia Blanco all chipped in six points in the victory.
 
The Dustdevils shot 38% from the floor on the afternoon, however just 21% from three (6-for-29). However, the Dustdevils outrebounded the Pioneers 38-24 and held them to just 39% shooting and 29% from three.
 
The Dustdevils are scheduled to return to action on January 2 when they face Texas A&M-Kingsville at home to open 2021.
