Five double-digit scorers pace Women's Basketball in Division II Showcase at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas  Texas A&M International University women's basketball (7-14, 4-11 LSC) fell to the Midwestern State Mustangs (8-10, 6-8 LSC) 87-77 in Lone Star Conference play on the road on Saturday afternoon. The game was part of the 2019-2020 Division II Basketball Showcase that aired on ESPN3.

In the first quarter, Eva Langton dropped in a layup and was later followed by a Jaden Gonzales shot from beyond the arc to give the Dustdevils a slim one-point advantage (12-11) with 5:37 on the game clock.
  
Elizabeth Cathcart registered 10 points in the opening quarter to give the Mustangs a 24-20 edge after the first period. 

In the second stanza, Josselin Geer scored four-straight points for the Dustdevils, including a shot from long distance, to knot the game at 24 apiece at the 8:54 mark.

Later in the period, TAMIU's Clara Fernandez found Lindsey Thorpe in three-point territory to tie the game at 35 with 4:49 left in the first half.

Midwestern State used an offensive barrage to conclude the half by stringing together 12-consecutive points that featured a three-pointer and a jump shot made by Mica Schneider to send the 51-39 game into the break.

Although the Mustangs were leading by 15 (59-44) at the 6:29 mark in the third quarter, the Dustdevils chipped away at the lead when they went on a 6-0 run that was sparked on a Fernandez layup and was capped off on a three-pointer by Thorpe that slashed their deficit to eight (61-53) with three minutes to play in the period.  

Midwestern State would later add to its advantage and took a 66-55 edge at the end of the third quarter. 

In the final period, Midwestern State took its largest lead of the game when Markayla Johnson sank a layup to give the Mustangs a 17-point cushion (73-56) with 7:31 remaining. 

Midwestern State would ultimately hang on and take a 87-77 victory.

Patrycja Jaworska and Geer scored 15 points apiece for the Dustdevils while Fernandez recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points (5-of-10 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) and a season-high 11 rebounds (6 offensive). Fernandez also tallied season highs in assists (7) and steals (5). Gonzales chipped in with 13 points (4-of-8 3FG) for TAMIU while Thorpe registered a dozen points (4-of-7 FG, 3-of-4 3FG) off the bench in 10 minutes of playing time.  

Schneider led all scorers with 26 points (8-of-16 FG, 5-of-11 3FG) while grabbing nine rebounds and dished out a team-high seven assists. Cathcart had 20 points (7-of-15 FG) and nine boards for the Mustangs. 

In the end, Texas A&M International shot 37.3 percent (28-of-75) from the field, 32.4 percent (12-of-37) from three-point range and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the free-throw line while Midwestern State shot 47.1 percent (33-of-70) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from beyond the arc and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the charity stripe. The Mustangs held the advantage in rebounds (49-44), blocks (10-2) and assists (22-19). TAMIU held the advantage in steals (16-12).

The Dustdevils return home on Thursday, February 6 and will take on St. Edward's (12-8, 8-7 LSC) in LSC action at 5:30 p.m.
