LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (5-10, 5-10 LSC) knocked off Lubbock Christian (3-12, 3-12 LSC) in a wild 1-0 win in the 13-inning series opener on Friday.
The game was a true pitcher's duel from the beginning. Both teams scattered a total of 11 hits across the first nine innings.Â
TAMIU starting pitcher J.J. Sanchez threw an absolute gem for 7.0 innings only allowing four hits and striking out a career-high 13 batters. Bryce Faust relieved him in the eighth inning and proved to be just as unhittable, only allowing one hit in the final six innings, striking out four and only walking one batter.
The Dustdevils got their first real chance to score in the bottom of the 11th, as Phillip Sanchez walked to leadoff the inning. Anthony Handel reached first on a fielder's choice bunt that moved Sanchez to second. A Luis Flores sacrifice bunt moved both runners into the scoring position at second and third. LCU then intentionally walked Andrew Holsey to load the bases. Unfortunately, TAMIU left the bases juiced as the Chaps got two quick outs by way of a fly ball to center and a groundout to second.
TAMIU got their next best chance two innings later in the bottom of the 13th. Handel was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and later took second on a failed pickoff attempt. LCU intentionally walked Holsey again, putting runners at first and second with one out. Sergio Esqueda loaded the bases as he was also hit by a pitch. The Dustdevils walked the game off during the next at bat as the umpires ruled that the Chaps' pitcher balked, bringing in Handel from third giving TAMIU the 1-0 victory.
Bryce Faust (1-0) earned his first win of the season in the hard fought victory. LCU's Koi Carrillo (0-1) suffered the loss.
The series will continue on Saturday, Feb. 29 with a doubleheader of two seven inning games.
