PORTALES, N.M. -Â Texas A&M International baseball (1-3, 1-3 LSC) took the series opener 6-2 over Eastern New Mexico (0-4, 0-4 LSC) on Friday.
The Greyhounds got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as an RBI single scored a run.Â
The Dustdevils broke the game open in the top of the second with four runs. Phillip Sanchez and Paris Johnson scored on a Hunter Trinidad triple to left to put TAMIU up 2-1. Trinidad then scored on a Sergio Esqueda triple. Anthony Handel drove in Esqueda for the fourth run with a groundout to second for a 4-1 lead. ENMU got one run back in bottom half to trim the advantage to 4-2 on a groundout to short.
TAMIU extended their lead in the third as Jerry Villareal scored on a Sanchez single to go up 5-2.
The game devolved into a pitcher's duel for the next four innings as neither team was able to push a run across.
The Dustdevils added one final run in the top of the eighth. Adrian Castillo came in as Handel drew a bases loaded walk to give TAMIU the 6-2 victory.
TAMIU's Abanny Garcia earned his first win of the season with the decision. ENMU's Ethan Coombes (0-2) suffered the loss.
The series will continue with game two tomorrow.
