LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International volleyball turned its weekend into a positive, breaking out the brooms in a 3-0 sweep over Western New Mexico.
 
The Dustdevils (3-15, 3-8 LSC) opened the contest with a 25-17 set one victory. Falling behind 4-2 early and then bouncing back-and-forth, TAMIU went on an 8-2 run after tying the game 8-8 to go ahead 16-10 and never look back.
 
Set two saw the Dustdevils hold control again, leading by seven or more points multiple times. TAMIU opened up a 19-10 lead and a lift after what was expected to be a kill swung momentum for the Mustangs momentarily, going on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to 21-16. The Dustdevils buckled down to take the set 25-19.
 
In set three, both teams were battling closely, with the score 16-14 midway through. A 6-1 TAMIU run opened the set up and the Dustdevils finished the victory with a 25-20 match set win.
 
Senior 
Mackenzie Catalina was the spark plug offensively, picking up 18 kills and 16 digs on the afternoon. Graduate student 
Ilina Spasova secured her career high 12 kills as a Dustdevil, while sophomore 
Yaretzi Ortiz added 11 kills as well.
 
Senior 
Deserey Gomez matched Catalina with a game-high 16 digs and Spasova also had double-digits with 13. Senior 
Maison Kosse was a huge helper on the offensive side with 41 assists.
 
The Dustdevils now look to make the win a streak, as the take to the road this coming weekend. TAMIU opens with Eastern New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 29 for a 7 p.m. start from Portales, N.M.
