Dustdevils Fall To Angelo State In First Match of ASU Invitational

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International volleyball (3-5) fell to Angelo State (9-0) in a 3-0 decision (18-25, 16-25, 18-25) in the first match of the ASU Invitational on Friday.

Sophomore Skylar Warde led the Dustdevils with 10 kills with a dig and a block. Reigning LSC Offensive Player of the Week, junior Mackenzie Catalina posted eight kills with five digs and a block. Freshman McKenna Flagler logged 24 assists with nine digs, two blocks and a kill. On the defensive side Regina Tijerina contributed 12 digs with two assists.

The opening set was close early with both teams trading points back and forth. The Rambelles pulled away as they combined several long runs to go up 21-10. The Dustdevils managed to fight to cut the lead to 23-17, but ASU eventually took the frame 25-18.

The second set was all Rambelles as they started on a 6-2 run. TAMIU battled to trim the deficit to 11-9, but that would be as close as they got. ASU kept pushing their lead out until they took the set 25-16.

The Dustdevils looked to have some fire to start the third set as they opened on a 6-1 run, and eventually went up 12-5. However, the Rambelles answered to pull within 12-10. TAMIU counterpunched and went back up 17-12. Unfortunately, ASU responded with a 13-1 run to close out the match and take the 25-18 decision.

TAMIU will be back in action tomorrow for their final two match of the ASU Invitational against Midwestern State at 10 a.m. and Western New Mexico at 2 p.m.
