AUSTIN, Texas - Texas A&M International softball's seventh inning rally fell just short in a 2-1 loss to St. Edward's to open the season series on Tuesday.
Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, the decision was made post game to move the doubleheader to Wednesday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., due to the weather conditions in the Austin area.
TAMIU (15-18, 11-11 LSC) threatened in the top of the first inning, moving a runner to third base, but she would be left stranded.
The Hilltoppers (17-11, 11-8) got all it needed in the bottom of the first inning, with a two-run home run to jump ahead 2-0.
The Dustdevils had multiple chances to chip away at the deficit, but would leave a runner at second base in the third inning, the bases loaded in the fifth inning and a runner at third base in the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh, TAMIU plated its lone run of the game thanks to an RBI single by freshman
Kennedy Griego with two outs, but still with runners on first and second would go down for the final out to end the game.
Junior
Erika Cortez started in the circle for the Dustdevils and allowed two runs, seven hits, five walks and struck out five in the complete game effort.
Offensively, freshman
Katelyn Luera led the way with a 2-for-3 outing, while three others contributed a hit to TAMIU's total of five.
As previously noted, the Dustdevils and Hilltoppers will now play their doubleheader tomorrow, Wednesday, March 22 beginning with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
