LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball opened its season series against #11 Lubbock Christian in doubleheader action, falling to the Lady Chaps 6-0 in game one and 8-2 in game two.
GAME 1: #11 LCU 6 TAMIU 0
Lubbock Christian (32-8, 22-7 LSC) would score in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead through those frames.
The scoring came thanks to an RBI single in the first, a sacrifice fly in the second and a two-run home run in the third inning.
The Lady Chaps closed the scoring in the fifth inning with their second two-run homer of the afternoon.
TAMIU (15-22, 11-15 LSC) could only manage to put four baserunners on in the game, including a single hit each by junior
Kristy Alanis and sophomore
Hannah Reiley, a hit batter and a walk.
Sophomore
Carla Arellano worked the complete game in the circle, allowing six runs, 11 hits, three walks and struck out five.
GAME 2: #11 LCU 8 TAMIU 2
The Dustdevils were the early aggressor in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
In the inning, freshman
Kennedy Griego drove in the first run with an RBI single, followed by the second run scoring on an RBI walk by fellow freshman Kaitlyn Luera.
Lubbock Christian would comeback to take the lead 3-2 in the third inning with an RBI single, a run crossing on an error on a stolen base attempt and a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Chaps plated two more in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 on an RBI walk and an RBI infield single.
TAMIU would threaten in the bottom of the fifth, getting runners at second and third, but were unable to bring either runner across.
Again, LCU plated a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single which grew the lead to 6-2.
The Dustdevils again threatened in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double, but a flyout and back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
The Lady Chaps close the scoring in the seventh inning, plating two more runs with a pair of RBI singles.
Sophomore
Tessa Ramirez started in the circle and in 5+ innings allowed six runs (five earned), eight hits, four walks and struck out three.
Freshman
Celeste Apaez pitched in relief and allowed two unearned runs and four hits in two innings.
TAMIU collected three hits in game two with Alanis, Griego and graduate
Victoria Maldonado all with one each.
The Dustdevils will look to take one in the series in the finale, tomorrow, Saturday, April 1 at 11 a.m.
