RICHARDSON, Texas – Texas A&M International University graduate Dan Hernandez of the baseball team and graduate Mackenzie Catalina of the volleyball team earned LSC Scholar-Athlete Awards on Tuesday.
Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at member institutions. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.
Hernandez excelled in both the classroom and on the field, completing his master's degree with a quality GPA.
On the field, Hernandez finished the season with a .323 average in 124 at-bats. He hit three home runs and totaled 25 RBI, while also scoring 29 runs.
Catalina completed her undergraduate degree in just three years, and completed her master's degree in the fall semester.
Catalina broke the TAMIU kill record last season, and this year added to that mark with a team-high 407 kills on a team-high 1,219 attempts. She averaged 3.80 kills per set (led the team) and had a team-high in points with 461 and service aces 34.
Catalina's 407 kills were the second most in the LSC and her 3.80 kills per set was third best in the conference and the 461 points was fourth best. Her 34 service aces placed her 10th in the LSC.
