Cross Country

Kipsang and Too Win LSC Cross Country Weekly Honors

Laredo, Texas- Donald Kipsang and Lewis Too brought home runner of the week honors with Donald Kipsang winning Runner of the Week and Lewis Too winning freshmen of the week after their outstanding team performance this past weekend.

With the regular seasons completed, all teams turn their attention to the LSC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 26, and hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville at Dick Kleberg Park in Kingsville, Texas (501 Santiago Park Lane).

Week 5 Racing (Oct. 11-12)
Several Lone Star Conference men's and women's teams prepped for the league championships with competition at one of three events October 11-12. … Eastern New Mexico sent individuals to the NMJC Invitational-III (Hobbs, N.M.) on Friday. Sylvia Lagat ran a 20:40.5 over the 5K to place 23rd with teammate Elizabeth Lujan-Towles in 28th (20:43.7). Bryan Hernandez led the Greyhound men, placing 41st (28:35.1) for the 8K.  …  Texas A&M-Kingsville headed north to Romeoville, Ill., and the Lewis Crossover. The Javelina women finished 21st among the 36 teams, paced by Maya Espinosa who completed the 6K in 22:17.2. TAMUK finished 14th in the Men's 4.97 Mile Open behind Roberto Alejandro (41st/26:42.6). Nirmit Dahiya was the lone TAMUK runner in the men's 8K, posting a 26:40.0.  …  Three women's and two men's teams competed at the West Side Classic (Windcrest, Texas). Texas A&M International won the men's 8K team title with Angelo State fifth. TAMIU was boosted by the 1-2-3-4 individual finishes of Donald Kipsang (24:25), Lewis Too (25:02), Emmanuel Langat (25:20) and Josphat Langat (25:21). In the women's 6K, Midwestern State placed second, ASU third and TAMIU sixth. MSU's Ella Pando ran an LSC season-best 21:14.8 to finish second. Allison Vaughn led ASU at fifth place (21:56.2) while Mercy Kosgei was the top TAMIU finisher at 17th (22:43.6).

RUNNERS OF THE WEEK  |  Competitions October 7-13
 
WOMEN
Brooke Latham, Oklahoma Christian, Jr., Psychology, Amarillo, Texas
Moving her way through a deep 272-runner field the entire race, Brooke Latham broke through to place 19th at the UAH Chargers XC Invitational. The junior posted a 21:33.1 time over the 6K course to lead the Oklahoma Christian contingent in its Top 15 team finish.
 
MEN
Donald Kipsang, Texas A&M International, Fr., Undecided, El Doret, Kenya
Donald Kipsang won his first collegiate individual title, taking top honors at the 8K OLLU West Side Classic in a 24:25.8 time. The freshman outdistanced the next runner by over 46 seconds to lead Texas A&M International to the team title.
 
 
FRESHMAN RUNNERS OF THE WEEK  |  Competitions October 7-13
 
WOMEN
Chasity Benson, Angelo State, Fr., Biology, Roby, Texas
Chasity Benson covered the OLLU West Side Classic course in 23:08.1 to finish 22nd among individuals and helped Angelo State to third place on the team list.
 
MEN
Lewis Too, Texas A&M International, Undecided, El Doret, Kenya
Lewis Too claimed second at the OLLU West Side Classic, covering the course in a collegiate personal-best 25:02.4 and helping Texas A&M International to a first-place team finish.
