Laredo, Texas – Despite some less than favorable weather, the Dustdevils (4-7, 1-0) took on Eastern New Mexico (7-2, 0-1) in their Lone Star Conference home opener Saturday afternoon in Laredo.
Erika Cortez got the nod for the Dustdevils and worked hard to keep the Greyhounds offense at bay.
Cortez held the Greyhounds scoreless through three before a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning got ENMU on the board. The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the fifth with an RBI single and one more on an error in the seventh, but were unable to catch the Dustdevils.
She finished the game pitching 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout.
On the offensive side, the Dustdevils came out hot. An RBI double from
Victoria Gonzalez and a 2-run single from
Zaria Brigham put TAMIU up 3-0 in the first inning.
The Dustdevils added to their lead in the bottom half of the sixth with RBI's from
Victoria Maldonado and
Kristin Maldonado.
The TAMIU offense earned five walks and a hit by pitch in the contest with just four strikeouts.
The series continues between the Greyhounds and the Dustdevils Sunday at 12:15 and 2:45 p.m. as TAMIU looks for its first conference series win of the young 2024 season.
