Laredo, Texas- The Texas A&M International Dustdevils bounced back into action Thursday evening as they took on the UT-Tyler Patriots. The two teams came into the match tied in the LSC Conference Men's Basketball standings in their respective division. The Dustdevils entered the evening 8-10 overall while the UT-Tyler Patriots entered the game 7-8 overall on the season.
The Dustdevils started off the first half strong, jumping out to their largest lead of the night which was 21-11 with ten minutes left to play in the half. The Patriots would not give in as they found themselves back in the game down four to the Dustdevils at 33-29. The Dustdevils shot 11-29 from the field, 6-17 from three, and were perfect from the free throw line during the first half.
The second half was exhilarating as both teams traded buckets back and forth. The largest lead of the second half was eight points. During the last five minutes of play, there was never more than a four-point differential. It was not until there were three and half minutes left in the game until the Patriots took their first lead of the game at 62-61. Leading down into the stretch both teams were in the bonus.
Filip Mamic, who had only shot seven free throws the entire season, stepped to the line with less than a minute to play to knock down two clutch free throws for the Dustdevils. On the other end,
Filip Mamic grabbed a defensive rebound and was fouled sending him once again to the line. Mamic came in clutch once again, knocking down both free throws to put the Dustdevils up by two points with 40 seconds left to play in the game. A big time three by UT-Tyler's Mareng Gatkuoth put the Patriots on top with twenty three seconds left to play in regulation. Once again, it was the heroic efforts of
Anthony Ignowski to drive to the hoop to finish with what ended up being the game winning layup. Of course it was an all around team effort as great defense on the other end led to a defensive stop and a rebound by
Isaiah Somers which sealed the game for the Dustdevils.
The final score was 67-66 as the Dustdevils held on. The Dustdevils shot 21-55 from the field, 10-29 from three and were 15-18 from the charity stripe.
Anthony Ignowski led all Dustdevils with 16 points, he also had five assists and six rebounds.
Esteban Roacho finished the game with ten points and four points.
Caylen Goff Brown had a huge night from downtown as he finished with 14 points and was 4-6 from three point.
Elijah Bailey finished the evening with ten points and three assists. The story has been much of the same all year as the bench points totaled 29. The Dustdevils continue to show the depth in their roster.
The Dustdevils will be back in action at home against #16 Dallas Baptist on Saturday at 3:00 PM CDT.
