Laredo, Texas – Texas A&M International volleyball outlasted Midwestern State in a thrilling five-set battle Saturday afternoon, securing a 3-2 victory (25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 15-9) inside the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
The Dustdevils came out strong, taking the first two sets behind efficient offense and key plays from their front line. Midwestern State responded to even the match at two sets apiece, forcing a decisive fifth frame. TAMIU regrouped and delivered its best hitting set of the afternoon, swinging .400 to close out the match.
Freshman
Sierra Sanchez powered the Dustdevils with a team-high 19 kills, four service aces, and 21 digs for a double-double performance.
Mia Molina added 22 kills and 22 digs of her own, while
Danea King hit an impressive .538 with 16 kills and four blocks.
Dilean Bounds directed the attack with 32 assists, and
Natalia Cisneros chipped in 33 more to pace the offense.
Defensively, TAMIU recorded 98 digs as a team and outblocked the Mustangs 7-6.
With the win, the Dustdevils improve to 4-16 overall and 2-9 in Lone Star Conference play.
TAMIU heads on the road to face Texas Woman's on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
