RICHARDSON, Texas — Texas A&M International softball delivered one of its strongest offensive performances of the season Sunday, sweeping UT Dallas in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at UTD Softball Field. The Dustdevils claimed an 8-0 run-rule victory in Game 1 before securing the sweep with an 11-7 win in Game 2.
The offensive surge powered TAMIU to 19 runs on 19 hits across the two games, while pitchers Nevaeh Herrera and Kylie Goad each earned wins in the circle.
Game 1
TAMIU 8, UT Dallas 0 (5 innings)
After three scoreless innings, the Dustdevils broke the game wide open with a seven-run fourth inning that put the contest out of reach.
The rally began when Victoria Espinoza delivered an RBI double, plating the first run of the game. Moments later, Nevaeh Herrera ripped a two-run single to extend the lead to 3-0. TAMIU continued to capitalize on defensive miscues and timely hitting, with Austyn Marriage and Queenandra Dunn each adding RBIs during the inning as the Dustdevils pushed across seven runs.
Espinoza added the finishing touch in the fifth inning, launching a solo home run to right-center field to make it 8-0.
In the circle, Herrera was dominant, tossing a five-inning complete game shutout. She allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out two to secure the victory.
Espinoza led the offense with two hits, including a double and a home run, and two RBIs, while Marriage and Herrera also recorded two hits apiece.
Game 2
TAMIU 11, UT Dallas 7
The Dustdevils struck early again in Game 2, plating four runs in the first inning behind a leadoff home run by Austyn Marriage and an RBI single from Queenandra Dunn.
UT Dallas answered with three runs in the bottom half, but TAMIU maintained control of the game with continued offensive production.
In the third inning, Victoria Espinoza blasted a solo home run to extend the lead. The decisive moment came in the fourth inning when Queenandra Dunn launched a three-run homer, capping a four-run frame that pushed the Dustdevils' advantage to 9-4.
TAMIU continued to add insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including an RBI double by Espinoza and a run that scored on a UT Dallas error.
The Comets attempted a comeback in the sixth when Cadence Hernandez hit a three-run home run, trimming the lead to 10-7, but the Dustdevils held on to secure the victory.
Kylie Goad went the distance in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing seven runs on 15 hits and striking out three.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Victoria Espinoza is the daughter of Flor Salazar and Cesar Espinoza. She has one brother, Caesar Daniel Espinoza. She is pursuing a degree of Biology.
Espinoza delivered a standout performance across both games, providing power and timely hitting for the Dustdevils. She recorded five hits in the doubleheader with two home runs, a double, and multiple RBIs, including a solo homer in each game that helped fuel TAMIU's offensive surge. Her production in the middle of the lineup proved pivotal in the Dustdevils' sweep.
