2016:
Smith had an impressive freshman season where he recorded a Top-15 finish at the Islander Splash. The Eagle Pass, Texas native finished 13th at the meet hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi covering the 8,000-meters in 28:40.3. He finished 64th at the Heartland Conference Cross Country Championships running a personal best time of 28:15.5 over 8,000m. He registered a 72nd place finish at the 7th Annual Roadrunner Invitational in 30:21.7. He opened his collegiate career with a 122nd place finish at the Rice Invitational running 22:44.1 over 6,123-meters.


High School: Eagle Pass High School (Class of 2016)
Smith ran high school track and cross country as a varsity member.


Personal: Edward Smith is the son of Sandra M. and Edward A. Smith II. He is joined by his siblings Jacob, Jeremiah, and Sadie. Smith chose TAMIU because it offered him a higher level of education that is relatively close to his hometown. His most inspirational figure is his father. His future aspiration is to become a Physical Therapist. Smith's favorite athlete is Kenenisa Bekele, an Ethiopian long-distance runner who holds the world record and Olympic record in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters events. In his spare time, Smith enjoys reading and play video games.
