Men’s Soccer Wins on Dominguez’ Last Second Goal

Box Score DALLAS, Texas – In a heated back and forth affair that featured three total red cards and a broken nose, the TAMIU men’s soccer team came away with a 3-2 triumph over the Dallas Baptist Patriots Thursday night.

Freshman forward Robert Dominguez scored the game winning goal for the Dustdevils in the 89th minute, firing a shot past the DBU keeper after taking a cross from Elkin Marin-Tobar.

The win keeps TAMIU’s hopes of a third straight conference title alive, as they remain half a game behind conference leader St. Edward’s with only two conference games remaining.
Despite numerous opportunities to take the early lead, the Dustdevils failed to find the net
and the score remained 0-0 at the half.  DBU for on the board first in the 56th minute on a David Balyear header off a throw in from Christian Lampe.

In the 70th minute TAMIU lost forward Edgar Flores, who was sent off with his second yellow card of the game.  Minutes later Patriots’ defender Cameron Garner was issued a red card and Joan Vallejo was able to equalize on the ensuing free kick.

Just two minutes later, sophomore forward Jovany Macias found himself in a one-on-one with the keeper and a chance to give TAMIU the lead.  He managed to deliver the go ahead goal, but not before a collision with the keeper sent Macias to the sideline with a broken nose.

The Dustdevils gained a man advantage in the 86th minute, when DBU was issued its second red card of the game, this time on forward Landon Lacy.  Despite being shorthanded, the Patriots came back with an equalizer of their own when Ryan Jackson
knocked in a pass from Alex Becerra in the 87th minute.

Dominguez tallied the game winner just two minutes later, lifting TAMIU’s record to 5-1-2 in conference play.

TAMIU keeper Jesus Cisneros finished with three saves on the night, improving his season record to 9-4-2.  The Dustdevils outshot the Patriots 19-9, with an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The win over DBU sets up a huge showdown with conference leader St. Edward’s University (6-1-1) this Saturday in Austin.  The Dustdevils trail the Hilltoppers by half a game in the conference standings with only two conference games remaining, and can move into sole possession of first place with a win.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game in Austin is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
