Women’s Soccer Falls to no. 3 St. Edward’s

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – The TAMIU women’s soccer team dropped their second consecutive Heartland Conference match Saturday afternoon, coming up just short of the no. 3 St. Edward’s Hilltoppers 4-2.

After falling behind 0-2 in the opening half, the Dustdevils responded with two unanswered goals from Valeria Jaramillo and Paige Johnson to knot the game at two.  The Hilltoppers regrouped and scored two unanswered of their own, striking with seconds left in the first half and then again halfway through the second to secure the win.

The loss drops TAMIU’s conference record to 4-2 on the season, leaving the Dustdevils in sole possession of third place in the conference standings, two games ahead of Newman University.

St. Edward’s forward Meagan Anderson scored the opening goal of the game in the 16th minute, beating TAMIU keeper Aissa Pedraza on a penalty kick after Jessica Parker was whistled for a handball in the box.

Just two minutes later, an unmarked Taylor Wiseman gave the Hilltoppers a 2-0 lead, bending a shot inside the far post from 20 yards out.

Credit the Dustdevils for fighting back as freshman defender Valeria Jaramillo headed in a cross from Paige Johnson in the 35th minute to cut the deficit in half.  Only four minutes later, Johnson was able to equalize from 40 yards out on a free kick that sailed over the hands of the St. Edward’s keeper.

In an unfortunate turn, the Hilltoppers stole the momentum away from TAMIU in the final seconds of the first half, as Mikayla Engel headed in a corner kick from Kelly Davis to reclaim the lead 3-2.
With the Dustdevils once again looking for the equalizer, St. Edward’s forward Lauren Heller put the game out of reach midway through the second half scoring from 10 yards out in the 59th minute.  TAMIU was unable to produce another shot for the remainder of the match.

St. Edward’s outshot TAMIU 21-8 including a 6-1 advantage in the second half.  The Dustdevils produced only five shots on goal, while the Hilltoppers finished with 14.

The Dustdevils will step out of conference on Monday, traveling to Victoria, Texas to take on the University of Houston-Victoria, before returning to conference action Thursday, October 11 to battle UT-Permian Basin.  Monday’s road game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff and Thursday’s game is set for a 5 p.m. start.
