Men's Soccer Takes Tough Loss to No. 11 Colorado Mines

Box Score GOLDEN, CO - The TAMIU men’s soccer team’s hope for a bid in the national tournament took a significant hit Sunday afternoon, as the Dustdevils were walloped by regional foe no. 11 Colorado School of Mines 4-1.

The Dustdevils played an outstanding opening half on Sunday, creating plenty of scoring chances while outshooting the Orediggers 8-5.  Unfortunately TAMIU was unable to turn their opportunities into goals, while Mines was able to capitalize.

The Orediggers struck first in the 20th minute when Baski Baker found the back of the net after taking a pass from Tesho Akindele.  Akindele then gave Mines a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute with a well-placed shot past TAMIU keeper Jesus Cisneros.

Jovany Macias scored his second goal of the road trip in the 33rd minute, burying a penalty kick after Mines’ Darren Shaw was called for a handball inside the box.  The Dustdevils went into the half trailing 2-1.

The second half was a different story with Mines outshooting TAMIU 16-3 and adding two more goals to their tally.  Tanner McManus used a nifty header in the 47th minute to make it a 3-1 game before Akindele scored his second of the game on a penalty kick after Jesus Cisneros was whistled for a foul on a breakaway.

Mines finished with a 21-11 advantage in shots as well as an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.  Keeper Jesus Cisneros did all he could finishing with seven total saves, six of which came in the second half.

The loss drops TAMIU’s overall record to 1-2 on the season and sets up a must win at home versus no. 16 Midwestern State on Friday, September 14, if the Dustdevils are to keep their chances at a national tournament bid alive.  TAMIU and Midwestern State faced each other in the Dustdevils regular season opener in August, with Midwestern coming away with a 2-0 win.
