Men's Soccer Breaks Through Versus Newman

By Nikki Narducci and Karen Sickler

Box Score Laredo, TX – After two non-scoring games in the past week, the TAMIU men’s soccer team overcame their recent struggles erupting for a 3-0 win over Newman University Thursday night at Dustdevil Field.

The victory over Newman gives TAMIU their first conference win of the season (1-0-1 HC) and improves their overall record to 2-2-2.

The Dustdevils were led by freshman and Alexander High School alum Eduardo Gonzalez who scored twice in the match.  Junior Walter Anorou added a goal of his own, while sophomore Jovany Macias finished with two assists on the night.

The Dustdevils’ defense had another stellar outing, holding the Jets to three shots on goal. Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Jesus Cisneros, came through with his third straight shutout, giving him 35 saves on the season.

“When the goalkeeper doesn’t get tested it means we are playing good defense all over the place,” said Head Coach Claudio Arias.  “It’s not just the guys in the back, but rather everyone playing. We possessed the ball most of the game and it is easy to defend that way if we don’t give the ball away.”

The Dustdevils didn’t waste any time, scoring their first goal just 13 minutes in.  Gonzales took a back heel pass from Macias in the box and fired it past the Newman keeper to put TAMIU up 1-0.  At the 30 minute mark, Macias was on point once again, this time setting up Anorou, who was able to beat the Newman keeper with a well-placed shot.

After a strong first half, the Dustdevils took the field in the second with a 2-0 lead and Gonzalez built on that lead with an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute.

“Gonzalez played phenomenal tonight and is developing really well,’ said Coach Arias.  He loves playing in his hometown of Laredo, especially with the support of the community.”

TAMIU takes the field at home again on Saturday, September 22 at 2:30 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian University.

“OCU is a good team,” said Arias. “In sports you can never predict anything so we will come out ready to play and to keep the points here. That’s what we want to do.”
