ODESSA, Texas – Goals ripped into the nets on Saturday in Odessa as Texas A&M International visited the University of Texas of the Permian Basin for a Heartland Conference confrontation.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the game resulted in a 5-2 defeat as a trio of first-half strikes by the Falcons (5-6-0, 1-1-0 Heartland) cemented the difference. TAMIU falls to 4-6-1 (2-1-0 Heartland) with the decision.
The Dustdevils drop to an even more concerning 1-4-1 record while playing away from the TAMIU Soccer Complex. The team’s only victory outside of Laredo came at a neutral site in Durango, Colo., against the University of Mary on Sept. 14.
The Dustdevils were anything but quiet against the Falcons, recording more overall shots than the home side, but less were on target. TAMIU took 15 shots while UTPB fired 14, but only six of TAMIU’s were accurate – opposed to UTPB’s nine on frame.
TAMIU’s Jovany Macias recorded the team’s opening goal in the 66th minute when midfielder Adrian Elicerio dealt him a cross to the right side of the 18-yard box. Macias bulged the net to pull TAMIU into a 4-1 score line at that point.
Four minutes later, Macias shared the wealth with fellow forward Eduardo Serrano. Macias assisted Serrano’s strike with a through ball that found Serrano’s forehead in the 70th minute. That goal pulled TAMIU within two of the Falcons, but they finalized the result with a 86th minute goal.
Backliner Camilo Botero contributed with a shot on goal with the attack-minded Eduardo Serrano, Tayeb Ahmadi, Adrian Elicerio each landing one on target. Macias was the only double-dipper with two strikes on UTPB’s net.
The match’s goalkeepers Craig Branum and TAMIU’s Jesus Cisneros made four saves apiece through the 88-minute affair, but Branum allowed only the two balls past him.
The Falcons score line featured a brace by Nathan Coterell (38th, 41st minute) for his ninth and 10th scores of the season and single scores by German Chavarria (12th minute), Javier De Leon (48th minute), and Tyler Gibson (86th minute). Logan Sharp, Chavarria, Andrew Enriquez and Gibson were each credited assists.
TAMIU played a much cleaner game than the Falcons, receiving only 11 fouls against it and no bookings. The Falcons were whistled 20 times and booked with four yellow cards (Sharp, 39th minute; Chavarria, 55th minute; Coterrell, 74th minute; Matt Rodgers, 89th minute).
The Dustdevils continue with a five-piece of away matches on Oct. 14 against Lubbock Christian at noon. They then face Oklahoma Christian (Oct. 19, 5 p.m.), Dallas Baptist (Oct. 21, noon), Midwestern State (Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.) and St. Mary’s (Oct. 28, noon) before returning to the TAMIU Soccer Complex to host No.7 St. Edward’s on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m.
