LUBBOCK, Texas – A change of site and kickoff time couldn’t stall Texas A&M International as it ran to its fourth victory in six games. The Dustdevils defeated the hosting Lubbock Christian Chaps, 2-1, with some late heroics by a defensive stalwart.
The Heartland Conference match was moved because of unplayable conditions at LCU Soccer Field. With the weekend’s showers leaving standing water at LCU Soccer Field, the games scheduled for noon (men) and 2:30 p.m. (women) were rescheduled to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, at Frenship High School's Peoples Bank Stadium, which has a Field Turf playing surface.
The match was knotted at one until the final seven minutes of play, when junior right back Oscar Pompa nodded the game-winning notch in the 83rd minute. Both Jovany Macias and Adrian Elicerio were credited with the assist, helping Pompa to his second goal of the season and third of his career.
Pompa’s junior campaign is producing prosperous results, as he stands with more goals than bookings (1 yellow card) and an even .500 shots-on-goal percentage.
Macias prefaced his second-half assist with a well-taken goal from the penalty spot in the 30th minute. Macias lined up his shot from 12-yards out following the officials whistle signaled a Chaps infraction. The goal was Macias’ second of his junior campaign and 10th of his Dustdevils career.
The Dustdevils (5-6-1, 3-1-0 Heartland Conference) recorded their first win away from the TAMIU Soccer Complex, improving to 1-3-1 on the road. The Chaps fall to 5-4-1 with the loss.
LCU’s only goal came in the 55th minute when Billy Forbes fed Carlos Vela’s well-timed run, leading to a breakaway 1-on-1 with TAMIU goalkeeper Jesus Cisneros. The goal that resulted was LCU’s only shot on Cisneros’ goal, although the team leveled nine off-target assaults.
TAMIU waged fairly better offensively, shooting 16 times – but only a quarter of those were on frame, with two bulging LCU’s net.
Center official Dennis de Baca showed only two cards through the match, with both coming in the 13th minute to LCU’s Forbes and TAMIU’s Camilo Botero. The caution stands as Botero’s third of the season.
The Dustdevils face four consecutive road matches – with three counting as Heartland affairs – before returning home to host No. 7 St. Edward’s on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. That match will celebrate the Dustdevils’ senior class.
Before then, TAMIU will travel to Oklahoma Christian (Oct. 19, 5 p.m.), Dallas Baptist (Oct. 21, noon), Midwestern State (non-conference, Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.) and St. Mary’s (Oct. 28, noon).
