Box Score LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International exploded offensively in its first win of the season on Saturday night at the TAMIU Soccer Complex against the visiting Rogers State Hillcats.
The Dustdevils hung four goals on the Heartland Conference provisional member, led by sophomore forward Kim Garcia’s second-half brace. Garcia knocked the nylon in the 52nd and 69th minutes to finalize the Dustdevils’ victory after Jessica Parker (32nd minute) and Sam Zerilli (21st) got the party started in the first half.
TAMIU (1-6-0, 1-1-0 Heartland) only laid claim to one goal through its previous six matches, but Saturday’s showing quadrupled that number.
Zerilli opened the score sheet with a free kick from about 25 yards out, just right-of-center. She bulged the net for her first mark of the season. Zerilli wasn’t done with that goal, dishing a pair of assists through the final 70 minutes.
Zerilli fed Parker nearly 10 minutes later, springing the junior forward toward Rogers State’s net. She buried an 18-yard shot past Hillcats goalkeeper Jordan Harris.
Garcia flashed her fluidity from defense to offense in a matter of seconds, leading to her first strike of the match. She intercepted a pass from about 40 yards out before running the ball into the back of the net just seven minutes into the second half.
Nearly 20 minutes later, she drove the final nail into the Hillcats’ coffin with a point-blank burial off a Zerilli delivery.
All four goals were scored on Harris, who was substituted by Teri Cocke once the match was out of reach. The pair combined for six saves.
TAMIU keeper Christina Morales was beaten only once, in the 33rd minute, when Rogers State’s Melissa Subu finished a penalty kick. Christiana Sulak committed a from-behind tackle just inside the penalty box, putting Subu on the spot for the Hillcats’ only chance of the match.
Both teams received a pair of yellow cards, with TAMIU’s Sulak (33rd minute) and Parker (66th minute) being booked.
The Dustdevils will look to build onto their midseason momentum against Heartland rival Newman on Oct. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at the TAMIU Soccer Complex.
