Texas Woman's offers difficult test in Austin

Box Score

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M International women's soccer opened the Kim Yeatts Invitational hosted by St. Edward's in Austin with a match against Texas Woman's University at 11 a.m. on Friday. The Dustdevils fell, 5-0, after allowing a trio of first-half goals to the Pioneers; TAMIU falls to 0-2-0 on the young season after dropping a 6-0 result against the University of the Incarnate Word, a NCAA Division I program, on Aug. 29 in San Antonio.

The Dustdevils open their 2013 season with six consecutive away matches with a team featuring five newcomers on its teamsheet.

TAMIU registered three shots against Texas Woman's, with two soaring on target and forcing a save apiece by TWU's goalkeepers – Lindsey Sisco, who played the second half, and Alisa Velasquez, who played the first. Both keepers played 45 minutes in between the posts, with Velasquez splitting time as a midfielder.

Junior forward Jessica Parker shot twice and junior backliner Laura Twinem shot the team's third attempt.

Serving as a stark contrast, TWU registered 20 shots – seven on frame – and had four assists as a team to lead toward its five goals. The Pioneers' scorers included Velasquez (51st minute), Emily Davila (14th), Kayla Gorney (19th), Gabrielle Larson (43rd), and Lauren Smith (90th). Tori Crook dealt assists on Davila and Velasquez's goals, Smith assisted Gorney's strike and Sara Deeb delivered the cross on Larson's netfinder.

TAMIU earned only one corner kick, while TWU provoked one goal – Smith's finale – off eight total corners (five in the first half, three in the second).

The Dustdevils started senior Katelin Jennings in front of their net, but replaced her with freshman Christina Morales after just 25 minutes. Jennings recorded one save and allowed the Pioneers' first two goals; Morales made three saves but also allowed TWU's final three goals. The Dustdevils committed 11 fouls as a team, while the Pioneers heard the official's whistle just five times.

Only one caution was issued by center official Vanessa Beltran: a 45th-minute yellow card against the Pioneers' Tareyn Blanton.

TAMIU returns to action on Sunday, in the Kim Yeatts Invitational finale, against Southern Nazarene University at 9 a.m. The Dustdevils will open their home schedule on Sept. 27 against Heartland Conference rival St. Edward's at the TAMIU Soccer Complex.
