AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M International women's soccer team entered Sunday's match against Southern Nazarene in need of a rebound after a pair of season-opening losses.
Despite losing, 1-0, to the Crimson Storm (1-1-0) in the final match of the Kim Yeatts Invitational – hosted by St. Edward's – the Dustdevils played a much cleaner and organized game after losing the first two games by a combined score of 11-0. TAMIU started freshman Christina Morales in goal after starting Katelin Jennings in the season's first two matches.
Morales, a product of Rowlett, Texas, played all 90 minutes in between the posts, lowering her goals allowed average to 2.32 for the season after making six saves in the match on 13 shots faced. Jennings returned to playing in the midfield for 52 minutes – a position the senior played in eight games during her junior season.
The Dustdevils (0-3-0) registered only four shots in the match, with only one threatening Crimson Storm keeper Natasha Fuentes' goal. She made the save on TAMIU forward Kim Garcia's strike.
Sophomore forward Rosalia Pujols fired a shot along with a shot apiece by midfielders Sam Zerilli and Emily Behnke.
Southern Nazarene let 13 shots fly in the match – seven on frame – with the only goal bulging the net at the hour mark when forward Alyssa Glitzke struck a cross by Mallary Schaub into the wide open far-side of TAMIU's goal. Schaub was credited the assist on Glitzke's game-winner in the 60th minute.
TAMIU's Zerilli, a senior, was flashed her second yellow card of the season by center official Mike Brown in the 40th minute.
The Dustdevils will strive for their first victory on Sept. 13 in Gunnison, Colo., against Western State Colorado University at 4 p.m. They will then play at Adams State (Sept. 19) in Alamosa, Colo., and at the University of Texas at Brownsville (Sept. 23) before opening their home schedule against Heartland Conference rival St. Edward's at the TAMIU Soccer Complex on Sept. 27.
