LAREDO, Texas – Shots fell from all over the floor as senior shooting guard Stella Ghazarian powered Texas A&M International University to a statement 32-point victory at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building on Tuesday. The Dustdevils stretched to 4-0 with an 81-49 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce, led by Ghazarian's 22 points.
"I challenged the girls to execute," TAMIU coach Michelle Bento-Jackson said. "I thought from the opening tipoff, our half-court defense took the strengths away from Commerce. It was a tremendous team effort to control the defensive boards. I'm proud of them for their effort."
The Dustdevils dominated defensively, forcing the Lions into 18 turnovers and a slender 30.5 shooting percentage from the field. TAMIU grabbed 34 of its 42 rebounds on the defensive end, led by Keiona Matthew's eight boards.
Ghazarian shot 7-for-14 from the field and 6-for-11 from the 3-point arc to finish with a game-high 22 points in 24 minutes. Three other Dustdevils – Jessica Woo (19 points, 5 rebounds), Jessica Prieto (17 points, 5 rebounds) and Matthews (12 points, 10 assists) – finished in double figures.
The Dustdevils took aim and sunk 48 percent of their shots from the field and 44.4 percent from long range while practicing patient ball movement with 21 team assists.
TAMIU next travels to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Metropolitan State University of Denver on Nov. 28 and Colorado-Colorado Springs on Nov. 29.
