FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Texas A&M International University visited Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday in search of its fourth Heartland Conference victory in six games. Instead, thanks in part to the Lions' 21-2 run to start the second half, the Dustdevils (7-7, 3-3 Heartland) fell, 74-60.
Despite a combined 32 points by juniors Jessica Prieto and Keiona Mathews, TAMIU shot just under 40 percent from the field and were forced into 17 turnovers – which led directly to 19 of the Lions' points.
Prieto finished with a team-high 17 points and four rebounds and four assists before fouling out of the game after 31 minutes of action. She blocked two shots and swiped four steals. Matthews scored 15 points – seven from the free throw line – and finished with two rebounds and an assist.
All but one Dustdevil scored in the game, including 16 points from non-starters.
The Dustdevils return to the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building on Jan. 15 to host I-35 rival St. Edward's at 5:30 p.m.
