Current Heartland Conference Top-Seed Questions TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas – The current Heartland Conference top-seed team, St. Edward's University Hilltoppers (11-3, 5-1 Heartland), fought hard in the second half for their 57-54 win over the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (7-8, 4-3 Heartland) Thursday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology Convocation Building.
 
The Dustdevils came out strong in the first half and gave the Hilltoppers quite a scare. TAMIU took the lead at the start of the game with a layup by senior Jessica Woo. The closest the Hilltoppers got to the Dustdevils in the first half was when they tied the game at two, just three and a half minutes into the game. TAMIU took the lead just 15 seconds after again with a layup by senior Alexis Thomas. TAMIU had their largest lead at 14 points twice, with six and five minutes left on the clock. In the first half TAMIU shot 38.5 percent from the field, and 33.3 percent from the three-point range. They outnumbered St. Edward's whom shot 21.4 percent from the field, and zero percent from the three-point range. TAMIU went into halftime leading the Hilltoppers with an aspiring score of 30-18.
 
In the second half, the Hilltoppers shot back hard at the Dustdevils to look for their first lead of the night. The Hilltoppers succeeded as they shot 44.8 percent from the field, and 40 percent from the three-point range. In the second half the Dustdevils only shot 24 percent from the field, and 16.7 percent from the three-point range. TAMIU and St. Edward's battled for the lead in the second half, but the last lead the Dustdevils saw was with 4:34 left on the clock with a free throw from junior Jessica Prieto. The largest lead St. Edward's had on TAMIU was five points, unfortunately, with one minute to go in the game.
 
TAMIU was led by Prieto who had 17 points on the night, scoring12 points in the first half. Prieto also had three rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal in 33 minutes of play.
 
Following Prieto was Thomas who had 12 points, six rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Thomas went 100 percent (6-6) from the free throw line. Junior Keiona Mathews gave the Dustdevils 10 points and eight rebounds; just shy two rebounds of a double-double. Mathews also aided the Dustdevils in assists, blocks, and steals (one a piece). She also went 8-9 from the free throw line (88.9%).
 
Next up, TAMIU will take on University of Texas- Permian Basin (10-4, 4-2 Heartland) at the TAMIU KCB Saturday afternoon.
