TAMIU Downs the Falcons

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (8-8, 4-4 Heartland Conference) down the University of Texas – Permian Basin Falcons (10-5, 4-3 Heartland) 72-68 Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Kinesiology Convocation Building.

Junior Keiona Mathews led the way with a career-high 31 points, and 10 rebounds to make it a double-double. Mathews went 12-17 (70.5%) from the field, and 1-1 (100%) from 3-point range. She also added three steals and two assists on the day.

Junior Jessica Prieto did work on the court this afternoon with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals. The remainder of the buckets were shot by senior Stella Ghazarian, senior Jessica Woo, and senior Alexis Thomas, 8-7-6 points, respectively.

TAMIU took the lead at the start with a jumper from Mathews, just 20 seconds into the game. From then on, the Falcons had no chance to take the lead, besides when they tied the game at 18:10 in the first half. TAMIU led the way outscoring UTPB in the first half 33-25. The Dustdevils shot 40 percent from the field in the first half, while the Falcons only shot 20.6 percent.

The Dustdevils' largest lead of the afternoon happened twice in the second half, leading the Falcons by 15 points. Even though their largest lead occurred in the second half, UTPB fought back hard then, outscoring the Dustdevils 43-39 – although, that simply was not enough to take the win. TAMIU won the game by 4 points (72-68), which happened to be their smallest lead of the half.

"For the most part we did a good job of executing the scout which must continue to be a top priority for us. We didn't shoot the ball very well, yet we did a better job of attacking the basket. This was a good win for us and now we must prepare and put all our focus on St. Mary's," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson.

Next up, TAMIU will face Heartland Conference rival, St. Mary's, on the road Thursday night in San Antonio.
