TAMIU triumphs through double overtime to upset Dallas Baptist, 86-85

LAREDO, Texas (February 20, 2016) -- Fueled by Senior Anthony Alston 's 34-point effort, the Texas A&M International Men's Basketball team held on to defeat Dallas Baptist, 86-85, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. The upset of the Patriots, who are the first seed in Heartland Conference standings, moves the Dustdevils to 17-9 overall. In Heartland Conference standings, the Dustdevils are now at 12-6, putting them in the top tier of teams as they head to the post-season.

Celebrating Senior Day in their last home game of the 2015-16 season, the Dustdevils were looking to close out at home with a win. TAMIU kept pace with the Patriots, as neither of the teams were able to capture a lead greater than 7 points. At the half, the Dustdevils went to the room standing 1-point behind DBU. During the final 20 minutes of regulation, TAMIU secured the difference to send the game into overtime.

Through the first overtime, the Dustdevils pushed to gain a 4-point lead into the final minute of play. Dallas Baptist answered back with a three and a free throw in the dying seconds of the game, forcing double-overtime. In the second overtime, TAMIU built another 4-point advantage. Dallas Baptist answered back with another last-second three-pointer, but TAMIU held on to come out on top.

For the Dustdevils, Anthony Alston shined in his Senior Day performance. The Senior Guard collected 34 points, 8 steals, 4 boards and 3 assists. Juniors Jordan VanDeKop, Arthur Santanna and Kenny Hatch stepped up for TAMIU as well. VanDeKop notched 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Santanna collected a double-double, grabbing 13 points, 11 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Hatch picked up 12 points, and led the Dustdevils with 5 assists.

Head Coach Bryan Weakley commented on the upset by saying,"I am so proud and happy for our seniors tonight. This was a hard fought win, and so many of the guys stepped up." He continued by adding, "We beat a very good, well coached, Dallas Baptist team."

Up next, the Dustdevils will finish out their 2015-16 regular season campaign on the road. TAMIU faces Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday, February 25, and Lubbock Christian on Saturday, February 27. TAMIU will be heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament during the first weekend of March.
