SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 28, 2016) - After taking down No. 4 seeded St. Edward's earlier the Dustdevils upset No. 1 seed and #10 in the nation St. Mary's in game three of the Heartland Conference Softball Tournament. The Dustdevils defeated the top seeded Rattlers 4-3. TAMIU moves to 2-0 in the tournament.
The Dustdevils got off to another quick start in their second game of the day.
Taylor Vines slid around the tag at home in the first to put TAMIU up 1--0. The second run of the inning would score on an
Erika Sanchez RBI single to left field.
Sanchez stepped in to add two more RBI in the third with a double to left center.
Alyssa Acuna and
Brenda Parnin would score on the play, Sanchez was thrown out at third for the final out of the inning.
Neither team put runs on the board unitl St. Mary's pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Through six complete innings TAMIU held a one run advantage. The Rattlers would put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh before the final out was recorded by second baseman
Anna Parnin.
Delainy Thompson picked up the win. Thompson went six innings, striking out five. After winning game one,
Krystal De La Cruz came into the game, tossing a scoreless seventh, picking up the save.
The Dustdevils continue play in the tournament on Friday. TAMIU will take on No. 2 seed Lubbock Christian at 10 am.
