LAREDO, Texas (September 15, 2016) -- Freshman goalkeeper
Kiyana Lopez saw 30 total shots, 10 being on goal, in a late 0-1 decision contest against the Newman Jets on Thursday evening. Lopez stood her ground in net to keep the Dustdevils in the game, but the team would see their 5th loss of the 2016 season after 90 minutes of play. TAMIU Women's Soccer is now 0-5-0 and 0-2-0 in Heartland Conference play.
In net, Lopez gathered up 9 saves, a career high for the freshman. In addition to defending the shots at their net, the Dustdevils countered 12 Jets corner kick attempts. TAMIU's defensive efforts kept all of Newman's opportunities limited. The Jets lone goal came late in the action, happening in the 84th minute.
The dynamic of the Dustdevils game was not only defensive; multiple shots were registered across the TAMIU roster, including Freshman
Cio Bargallo - who had 6 throughout the night. Tacking on additional shots were
Samantha Ruiz,
Yolanda Gonzalez,
Monica Castro,
Paula Arias,
Estrella Espinoza and
Martha Perez.
Newman registered two yellow cards in the second half, but the Dustdevils kept their slate clean and finished the contest with zero.
Up next, the Dustdevils will take on Rogers State, in the first contest since the Hillcats had received full membership by the NCAA. The contest will take place on Saturday, September 17 at Dustdevil Field in Laredo, Texas. Kick off is set for 12pm CST.
