Men's Soccer opens 2016 season in overtime against Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colorado (September 2, 2016) -- The Dustdevils squared off against Adams State on Friday afternoon in Alamosa, Colorado to start their 2016 season. The Rocky Mountain Conference competitor hosted TAMIU for the first time in the history of both programs.

With a late goal to tie the game in the 76th minute by Senior Forward Ryan Hodgson, the Dustdevils pushed through the final minutes of play to force overtime. In overtime, the Grizzlies took the inaugural contest victory in the 94th minute.

In the first half, TAMIU saw seven newcomers take starting positions, while Tayeb Ahmadi, Josiah Benjamin, Christian Mendoza, and Michael Iskander returned as the veterans. Amongst the rookies, Goalkeeper Roberto Molina made his first start in a Dustdevil uniform.

The Dustdevils started play with two fouls against themselves, which started the fire for both teams. Molina saw his first opportunity to save a penalty kick in the 16th minute, keeping the score at 0-0 all. Seconds later, after blocking a shot from ASU's Jackson, the Grizzlies drew first blood with a goal in the 17th minute.

Returning veterans Rodrigo Zuniga and Ryan Hodgson entered the game at the 24th and 27th minutes, respectively. After becoming situated, the Dustdevils rifled off three shots in the final minutes of the first half. The shots came from Ryan Hodgson (40:11), Rodrigo Zuniga (41:49) and Andres Ogaz (43:39).

After the first 45 minutes of play, a lightning delay was called. The teams saw an extended delay.

Starting the second half, TAMIU continued to pepper the ASU keeper with shots from Michael Iskander, Rafael Montabes and Christian Mendoza.

The 74th minute offered the Dustdevils the momentum they needed to get on the board. Alan Rivera took a corner kick that was headed high by Ryan Hodgson. Two minutes later, Hodgson recieved a pass from Javier Soto which lead to the Dustdevils first goal in the 76th minute.

Both teams exchanged offensive pushes, but no goals were scored through the remaining minutes of play. The Dustdevils headed to overtime, where the Grizzlies managed to net the ball first.

In 93+ minutes of play, Roberto Molina finished his Dustdevil debut with two saves.

"Games are won by scoring goals and we didn't finish the opportunities we had in front of the goal," said Coach Claudio Arias. He continued by saying, "We fought hard, but did not make good decisions in front of the opponent's goal."

Up next, TAMIU will take on Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colorado on Sunday, September 4. The Dustdevils will be playing another inaugural contest against the Cougars. Game time is set for 4PM CST.
