Â
Michael Iskander scored the games lone goal of the game in the 27
th minute after nice build up play fellow senior
Yair Hernandez. It was his sixth career goal and first career of the game-winning variety as Y. Hernandez now has recorded an assist in back-to-back seasons.
Â
A LOOK AT FORT LEWIS
The Skyhawks fell to No. 6 Midwestern State 3-0 during Friday's season-opener for both teams at Stang Park in Wichita Falls. FLC was unable to overcome a first half goal from the Mustangs before allowing two more in the second half as they opened the season with a loss to MSU for the third straight season.

Â

Jatta recorded seven assists in 19 games in 2016 while Onumonu had eight goals including two game winners.
Â
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Senior
Michael Iskander has been a featured piece of the Dustdevil midfield since arriving on campus in 2014. He entered his senior season having made 49 appearances and 45 starts playing over 3,500 minutes for TAMIU. But he did something on Friday that he had yet to do in his collegiate career and that was score a game-winning goal.
The Kirkcaldy, Scotland, native, playing with a heavy heart after the passing of his grandmother scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 27
th minute in his 50
th appearance at TAMIU on an assist from
Yair Hernandez.
Â
MAKING A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION
The Dustdevils featured a few new faces in Friday's match against UCCS including three on the defensive side of the ball.
Carlos Herrera, Keanue Born and
Luis Diaz all opened their TAMIU careers with starts while
Elias Perales got his first start up for the Dustdevils. The trio in back proved too much for UCCS to handle as they shut down one of the most powerful offenses in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.
Herrera, the only junior out of the bunch, made three huge saves at the end of the first half to maintain the Dustdevil's lead while Diaz and Born worked together to shut down Preseason All-RMAC performer Jake McAllister from recording a shot on goal. Perales battled up front against the tall, physical defenders of UCCS helping splitting time with
Rafael Montabes.
Â
NOT SO NEUTRAL FOR ARIAS
Claudio Arias is one win short of 120 as the head coach at TAMIU but it's his record at neutral site matches that may be the most impressive. During his 14-year tenure in Laredo, Arias has gone 11-2-1 in neutral site matches including Friday's win over UCCS. A win over FLC on Sunday would mark the third time in his career that he has won two or more neutral site matches in a single season.
Â
UP NEXT
The Dustdevils will return to Laredo for a week of training before opening up Heartland Conference on the road against #9 St. Edward's and Dallas Baptist on Sept. 14 and 16.
