LAREDO, Texas (February 9, 2018) - The Texas A&M International University Baseball team opened the 2018 season at Uni-trade Stadium with a doubleheader against Cameron University. TAMIU fell 1-3 in game one and 4-5 in game two.
GAME 1: TAMIU 1 - CAMERON 3
Eleazar Rojas got the opening day nod in the first of two games on Saturday for the Dustdevils. The game was scheduled for seven innings where Rojas went the distance, striking out 10 while allowing just one unearned run. Seven innings would not decide the ballgame as an eighth inning allowed Cameron to take a 3-1 lead.
Highlights:
Rojas K's 10 in loss: The Senior Dustdevil opened the 2018 season for TAMIU. Despite a first inning run, Rojas kept the Aggie bats in check. CU tallied four hits against Rojas for just one run which was unearned. After three first inning walks, Rojas rung up 10 Aggies.
Ramirez goes 3 for 3: Mario Ramirez opened the 2018 campaign with a hot start at the plate. The Junior went 3-3 for the Dustdevils while picking up the lone RBI for TAMIU.
Six Dustdevils pick up a hit: Six of TAMIU's nine starters tallied a hit in the loss. Ramirez led the way as the only Dustdevil to pick up multiple hits while TAMIU tallied nine total.
Trimble's Debut: Mark Trimble made his pitching debut for the Dustdevils in an inning of relief. Trimble relieved Rojas in the extra frame where two runs scored on two hits.
GAME 2: TAMIU 4 - CAMERON 5
Ruben Solis made his Dustdevil debut as TAMIU's starter in the second game on Friday. Solis struck out seven but the Aggies put up five runs in his outing, four were earned. Sophomore
Mathew Trevino picked up a 3-3 performance at the plate in the loss. Trevino drove in three runs on three hits.
Highlights:
Day of the K: Dustdevils pitchers combined to strike out 11 Aggies in two games on Friday. Solis struck out seven in his debut while
Coleman Butler fanned one.
Arnulfo Salinas finished the game with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
Trevino's big game: Mathew Trevino went 3-3 at the plate in game two, the only Dustdevil to pick up more than one hit. Trevino also accounted for three of TAMIU's four runs.
Jorge Napoles added the fourth Dustdevil RBI.
Late Aggie rally: The Aggies were able to steal the second game of the day with a four-run fifth which allowed Cameron to take two games on Friday.
