TAMIU Takes Series From Jaguars With Doubleheader Split

VICTORIA, Texas - Texas A&M International baseball (3-6) claimed the series win over Houston-Victoria (5-5), splitting a double header on Friday.

GAME 1 - UHV 4, TAMIU 3

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Dustdevils made a late comeback to try and take the win, but ran out of time falling 4-3.

The Jaguars started hot as they got on the board early with a two-run blast to take an early 2-0 lead. They added another run in the second off a RBI single. They would get their final run in the fifth on a RBI double to take a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, however, TAMIU began to show some life as Phillip Sanchez drove Jorge Napoles in for the Dustdevils first run. They would pull within one run in the seventh as Anthony Handel hit a two-RBI single, scoring Hunter Trinidad and Matthew Villanueva with two outs. Unfortunately, a fly out to left would end the threat, giving UHV the 4-3 win.

Tyler Price (1-0, 6.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) earned his first win of the season in the decision. Hugo Mendiola (0-3, 1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) took the loss.

GAME 2 - TAMIU 26, UHV 2

The second game told a much different story for the Dustdevils, as they would go on to explode for a 26-2 rout of the Jaguars.

The offensive fireworks would kick off in the top of the first when back-to-back-to-back singles from Andrew Holsey, Handel and Napoles would put TAMIU on the board 1-0. A sacrifice fly from Nate Campos in the next at bat would score another run. A two-RBI single from Adrian Castillo would put the Dustdevils up 4-0 after one inning.

TAMIU would strike again for six runs in the third as a two-RBI single from Holsey would get the scoring started, bringing home Obi Obinwa and Trinidad. An RBI single would score Daniel Espinosa. The biggest hit of the inning came courtesy of a three-run bomb from Jorge Napoles that pushed the lead to 10-0.

The hits just kept coming in the fifth as TAMIU tacked on two more runs off RBI doubles from Napoles and Sanchez, stretching the advantage to 12-1.

The killing blow came in the sixth inning as the Dustdevils sent 17 batters to the plate, almost turning the batting order over twice, and scored 11 runs. TAMIU racked up eight hits before the first out was recorded, including a grand slam from Matthew Rosales.

The Dustdevils continued the scoring party in the seventh as they added three more runs. Andrew Pavon was beaned with the bases loaded to score Trinidad. An error by the first baseman would allow Castillo to score. The final run came as Campos was walked with the bases loaded, bringing in Espinosa.

When it was all said and done, TAMIU took the win 26-2.

Andrew Hernandez (2-1, 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) earned his second win of the season with the decision. Andrew Loudermilk (0-1, 2.2 IP, 9 H, 10 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) took the loss.

The Dustdevils will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 20 as they return home for a twin-bill with the Jaguars.
