LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (5-6) swept a doubleheader against Houston-Victoria (5-7), outscoring the Jaguars 10-3 on Wednesday.
GAME 1 - TAMIU 5, UHV 3
The game began as a pitchers duel, as both starters had only given up two hits apiece in the first two innings. However, the Dustdevils would crack the seal in the third with a RBI single from Jorge Napoles, driving in Daniel Espinoza. Espionza would score again in the fourth, this time on a RBI single from Andrew Holsey.
UHV would take their only lead of the day in the top of the sixth as Zechariah Vela would belt a three-run blast to put the Jaguars up 3-2. That lead was short lived though because in the bottom half of the inning a RBI double from Adrian Castillo would score Mauro Luna and knot the score at 3-3.
In the bottom the seventh, looking to avoid extra innings, Holsey would double to lead off the inning. After a groundout to third, Napoles would come to the plate and jack a two-RBI bomb over the right field fence to walk the game off and seal the 5-3 win for the Dustdevils.
Andrew Hernandez (3-1, 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) earned the decision in the victory. Austin Wailes (1-0, 0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) suffered the loss.Â
GAME 2 - TAMIU 5, UHV 0
The second game of the doubleheader was a true pitchers duel. TAMIU would get on the board early though, as a Nate Campos sacrifice fly would bring home Anthony Handel from third to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
The score stayed locked at 1-0 for the next three and half innings as Kenneth Saenz worked a one-hitter and the Jaguars starter had only allowed two hits. That would end in the bottom of the fifth as Matthew Villanueva would score Espinoza on a RBI single. Handel would tack on two more runs with a RBI triple, scoring Holsey and Villanueva, pushing the lead to 4-0.
TAMIU would get one more run in the sixth off a leadoff solo shot from Campos, giving the Dustdevils a 5-0 win.
Saenz (2-0, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 10 SO) notched his second win of the season in the victory. Tyler Price (1-2, 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) suffered the loss.
