SAN ANTONIO - Texas A&M International baseball (6-7) split a mid-week doubleheader with Our Lady of the Lake (8-10) on Tuesday.
GAME 1 - OLLU 8, TAMIU 2
In the first game of the doubleheader, it looked like both teams might be headed into a pitchers duel, as the starters worked two scoreless frames to start.
However, the Saints would break the game open in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs. The first run came on a RBI single, scoring the runner from second. The second came on a wild throw trying to gun down a runner stealing third, who then scored. Back-to-back RBI doubles netted OLLU an early 4-0 lead. They would tack on two more insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Dustdevils finally got on the board in the sixth as Adrian Castillo drove home Jorge Napoles with an RBI single. Daniel Espinoza would bring in Nate Campos with his own RBI single to trim the lead to 6-2.
Unfortunately, the Saints would put the game out of reach as the Saints countered TAMIU's comeback with two runs of their own in the bottom half to push out to an 8-2.
The Dustdevils would go quietly in the top of the seventh, giving OLLU the 8-2 win.
Aaron Gonzalez (1-0, 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) earned the win. Kenneth Saenz (2-1, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO) suffered his first loss of the season.
GAME 2 - TAMIU 6, OLLU 3
The second game was a complete reversal of fortunes, with TAMIU's bats exploding for five runs early in the first inning. Napoles would crack the seal with a RBI double that scored Andrew Holsey. Campos brought home Napoles the next at bat with his own RBI double. Obi Obinwa would bring home both Campos and Phillip Sanchez with a two RBI single. Espinoza capped the inning off with a RBI triple, bringing home Obinwa to give the Dustdevils a 5-0 lead.
The score remained the same for four innings until the Saints finally broke through for two runs in the fifth off a RBI fielder's choice and a RBI double, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
TAMIU would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Napoles scored on an error by the shortstop. However, OLLU would try to mount a comeback in the bottom half, getting a run back on a passed ball. The Dustdevils were able to get the final out with a play at the plate to take the 6-3 victory.
Andrew Hernandez (4-1, 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 4 SO) earned the win. Colton Vien (0-1, 0.2 IP, 3 H 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) took the loss.
TAMIU will be back in action on Friday, March 1 as they travel to Austin, Texas for a non-conference series against St. Edward's.
