Dustdevils Drop Doubleheader To St. Edward’s

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas A&M International baseball (6-8) dropped a non-conference doubleheader to St. Edward's (8-6) as part of a three-game series on Friday.

GAME 1 - SEU 8, TAMIU 3

In the first game of the doubleheader, it started out as a pitchers duel with both starters working scoreless opening frames. However, that would change in the bottom of the second as the Hilltopper bats would come alive with a two-run homer in the second at-bat of the inning. They would continue add to that later in the inning off a three-run home run and a RBI single, pushing the lead to 6-0. SEU would tack two more runs in the fourth as two runs scored on an error by the shortstop.

However, the Dustdevils would not go down without a fight, as they attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh. Matthew Rosales would double to left field, bringing in Phillip Sanchez and Nate Campos to put TAMIU on the board. Mauro Luna drove in Rosales with a RBI single, cutting the lead to 8-3. Unfortunately, the rally would come to an end with a game-ending unassisted double play by the first basemen for the Hilltoppers.

Blake Holub (2-1, 7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) earned the win. Ruben Solis (0-3, 6.0 IP, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) took the loss.

GAME 2 - SEU 16, TAMIU 10

The offenses kicked into gear in the second game as the Dustdevil bats came alive in the top of the first. Jorge Napoles got the scoring started with a RBI double, scoring Anthony Handel. Daniel Espinoza traded places with Napoles in the next at-bat with his own RBI double. Esponza scored on an error by the shortstop to give TAMIU an early 3-0 lead.

The Dustdevils added an insurance run in the top of the second as Napoles would earn another RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Andrew Holsey. However, SEU would get two runs back in the bottom half on back-to-back RBI sacrifice flies, cutting the lead to 4-2.

The Hilltoppers would take their first lead in the fourth, scoring five runs. A two-RBI single would tie the game, with a sacrifice fly, bases loaded walk and RBI single giving them a 7-4 lead.

In the fifth inning, they would add three more runs. Two runs came in on a RBI double and RBI triple, respectively. The third run scored on a wild pitch.

TAMIU started to mount a comeback in the eighth as Hunter Trinidad would score on a wild pitch. The next at-bat, Napoles would tattoo a pitch, sending it out of the park, for a two-run blast, scoring Handel and trimming the deficit to 10-7. However, SEU would kill the Dustdevils' momentum in the bottom half, scoring six runs and pushing the lead back out to 16-7.

Looking for some more late game heroics, Matthew Villanueva would bring in Obi Obinwa with a RBI single. Trinidad scored Villanueva with a ground out to first. With the bases loaded and one out, Handel walked, bringing in Adrian Castillo and cutting the lead to 16-10. Unfortunately, once again, the game would end on a double play, this time a 7-5 twin killing.

Ryan Hill (3-1, 5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) earned the win. Jacob Williamson (0-1, 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB) suffered his first loss of the season.

TAMIU will look to avoid the series sweep against the Hilltoppers tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
