LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International baseball (1-4) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Angelo State (4-2) on Friday.
GAME 1 - ASU 7, TAMIU 1
In the first game of the day, the Dustdevils could not figure of the Rams pitching to keep up offensively, falling 7-1 in seven innings.
ASU scored in each of the first four innings, scoring two each in the second, third and fourth. However, the TAMIU bullpen shutdown the Rams beginning with two outs in the fourth, as Andrew Pavon only gave up one hit with four strike outs over the final 3.1 innings.
The Dustdevils managed to finally break through in the fifth, as Mauro Luna got on with a leadoff single. Matthew Rosales followed that up with a single of his own. Daniel Espinoza was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Anthony Handel scored Luna as he grounded out to second to give TAMIU its lone run of the game. Unfortunately, the Dustdevils would go quietly in the sixth and seventh, giving ASU the 7-1 win.
Tyler Lesley (2-0, 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) earned his second win of the season with the decision. Ruben Solis (0-2, 3.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 6 SO) suffered his second loss of the season.
GAME 2 - ASU 13, TAMIU 1
The second game of the day played out much like the first game, as the Dustdevils had no answers for the Rams lights out pitching.
ASU got on the board early, as Hugo Menidola balked with the bases loaded to send the runner on third home. They would tack on another run in the fourth inning as a fly out to left brought home another run. The Rams broke out for three runs in the fifth off of an error on the catcher, a sacrifice fly and a ground out to push the lead to 5-0. They added a sixth run in the eighth on a RBI single.
In the top of the ninth inning, ASU came alive scoring seven runs off of three RBI singles, a ground out and an RBI double to a take a 7-0 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Dustdevils managed to avoid the shutout as an RBI single from Nate Campos drove home Hunter Trinidad for TAMIU's lone run.
Trent Baker (1-1, 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) earned the win only allowing one hit in seven innings. Hugo Meniola (0-1, 5.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 8 BB, 1 SO) suffered his first loss of the season.
Both team will be back in action tomorrow as the Dustdevils look to avoid the sweep with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
