LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (1-5) couldn't contain Angelo State's (5-2) offensive in the series finale, as they fell 11-1 in seven innings on Saturday.
Both starting pitchers worked the first two innings without giving up a hit, with Andrew Hernandez not allowing a hit through three innings.Â
In the bottom half, the Dustdevils had a chance to get on the board first as Matthew Rosales and Phillip Sanchez started the inning off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt by Daniel Espinoza put the runners on second and third with one out. Unfortunately, the Rams worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out to preserve the scoreless tie.
ASU finally broke through in the fourth, as Josh Elvir lead off the innings with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. An RBI single from Michael Urquidi would score a run from third to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. They tacked on three more runs in the fifth.
TAMIU scored its only run of the game in the bottom half as Andrew Holsey drove home Rosales with an RBI single, cutting the lead to 5-1.
The Rams answered back in the sixth with an RBI single. They would add five more runs in the top of the seventh to push the lead out to 11-1, and put the game in danger of being called early because of the run rule.
Needing to score at least one run to keep the game alive, the Dustdevils went quietly in the bottom half of the seventh, with ASU taking the 11-1 win.
Fabian Muniz (1-0, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) earned his first win of the season. Andrew Hernandez (1-1, 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 8 BB, 5 SO) took his first loss of the season.
TAMIU will be back in action on Feb. 14 as they travel to Victoria, Texas for a three-game series against Houston-Victoria.
