Dustdevils edge Westminster in overtime thriller

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Texas A&M International University men's soccer (3-0-0) defeated the Westminster College Griffins (2-1-0) 3-2 in overtime on Friday evening from Trailblazer Stadium in St. George, Utah. The Dustdevils now improve to 3-0-0 for the first time since 2014.

In the 18th minute, TAMIU midfielder Keanu Born dished a pass to Ruben Nielsen from eight yards out to give the Dustdevils a 1-0 lead.

Westminster battled back in the 39th minute as Amano Kaden found Bridger Hansen on a free kick that got by Dustdevil goalkeeper Josh Jones to send the teams into intermission at 1-1. 

In the second half, Nielsen fired a shot on the right side that past Griffin netminder Will Desantis to regain the one-goal advantage (2-1) in the 52nd minute. The crucial shot marked Nielsen's third career two-goal performance and his second two-goal game of the 2019 season.  

Westminster struck again in the 78th minute when Danny Darelli finished a feed from Max Bingman for the equalizer that would ultimately set the stage for overtime.

TAMIU showed its resiliency in the 98th minute when Cem Izgec registered his second-career game-winning goal off a feed from Nadav Datner to cap off a dramatic 3-2 victory for the Dustdevils. 

Jones made one save for the Dustdevils while Desantis forfeited the most goals throughout his stellar collegiate career while he stopped seven shots for the Griffins in defeat.

TAMIU held the advantage in shots (15-5) and shots on goal (10-3) while Westminster led the way in corner kicks (4-2).

The Dustdevils will remain in St. George, Utah Sunday, Sept. 15 for a non-conference matchup against the Dixie State University Trailblazers at 2:30 p.m. from Trailblazer Stadium.
