KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M International University women's basketball (9-15, 6-12 LSC) defeated the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas (4-16, 3-15 LSC) in a 56-48 Lone Star Conference road decision on Saturday afternoon.
After getting outscored 11-8 in the first quarter, the Dustdevils countered in the opening 2:31 of the second period by compiling an 8-1 run. In the spurt, Patrycja Jaworska and Nicole Heyn each sank a pair of free throws while Julynne Da Silva Sa and Josselin Geer dropped in layups to give TAMIU a four-point edge (16-12).
The Dustdevils also closed the second quarter strong as they put together 10-consecutive points in a span of 3:12 that featured layups by Jaden Gonzales and Clara Fernandez to give them a 26-14 advantage.
Moments later, Gonzales found Heyn beyond the arc to beat the buzzer and close out the half to send the 29-18 game into intermission. Through the first two quarters, TAMIU held the Javelinas to just 23.1 percent (6-of-26 FG) from the field.
In the third period, the Dustdevils swelled their lead to a game-high 13 points (31-18) on a shot by Gonzales from the charity stripe at the 9:45 mark. However, the Javelinas cut TAMIU's lead to five (31-26) by registering eight-straight points, including a layup and a jump shot by Anastacia Mickens with 6:12 showing on the game clock.
Jaworska would later make a layup and give the Dustdevils a 40-31 lead heading into the final period.
The Dustdevils held on to the lead in the fourth quarter as Heyn registered six points en route to the 56-48 victory.
Heyn finished with a double-double and led all scorers with 21 points (6-of-13 FG, 3-of-5 3FG, 6-of-6 FT) and all rebounders with 11. Geer chipped in with 11 points (5-of-8 FG) and nabbed a team-high three steals.
Mickens paced the Javelinas with 14 points (6-of-17 FG), seven rebounds and a game-high four steals while Madison Lucas scored a dozen points.
In the end, Texas A&M International shot 40.4 percent (19-of-47) from the field, 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from three-point range and 88.2 percent (15-of-17) from the free-throw line while Texas A&M-Kingsville shot 30.4 percent (17-of-56) from the floor, 0 percent (0-of-8) from beyond the arc and 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the charity stripe. The Dustdevils held the advantage in rebounds (35-34), assists (9-5) while the Javelinas led the way in blocks (2-1). Each team recorded 12 steals apiece.
The Dustdevils will remain on the road for a LSC showdown on Thursday, Feb. 20 against defending national champion Lubbock Christian (21-3, 15-3 LSC) at 5:30 p.m.
