SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International University softball (4-11) wrapped up the George & Ola McCorkle Challenge and dropped a 6-1 decision to the Angelo State Rambelles (12-3) and fell to the No. 21 Tarleton Texans (11-2) 12-1, respectively, on Sunday afternoon.
Game 1: Angelo State 6, Texas A&M International 1Â
Dustdevil starter Melanie Lint (L, 2-4: 4 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 0 K, BB) and Rambelle starter Paxton Scheurer (W, 2-1: 6 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 K, BB) were locked in a pitcher's duel until Courtney Barnhill stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the third inning and smacked a solo home run over the right center field fence.
In the home half of the fourth frame, the Rambelles used another solo home run, this time off the bat of Karina Rocha, to stretch their lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, Keilei Garcia hit a run-scoring single down the right field line to extend the Rambelles' lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Maleya Burns slapped a two-RBI single to center field to give them a five-run cushion (5-0).Â
In the top of the fifth inning, Victoria Maldonado (2-for-3, HR, 2B) responded with a leadoff home run off of Scheurer to trim TAMIU's deficit to four (5-1).
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Dustdevil relief pitcher Miranda Martinez (ND, 1-1: 2 IP, 2 H, ER, K, 0 BB) entered the game but surrendered an RBI double to Hatty Shope that allowed the Rambelles to regain a five-run lead and ultimately secure the 6-1 victory.Â
Game 2: No. 21 Tarleton 12, Texas A&M International 1 (5 Inn.)Â
The Texans registered five runs in the opening inning off of Dustdevil starter Denise Longoria (L, 0-4: 1.1 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 0 K, BB). Hallie Saintignan (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB) stole home to break the scoring ice and was later followed by a two-run triple by Kristen Zuehl (1-for-2, 3B, 3 RBI, 2 R).Â
Tarleton extended its lead in the top of the second inning as Georgia Capell (2-for-3, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, BB) and Destiny Crumpley registered back-to-back home runs off of Longoria to make it a 7-0 game. Later in the inning, TAMIU would bring in relief pitchers Karyme Carreno (ND: 0.0 IP, 0 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) and Miranda Martinez (ND, 1-1: 3.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 K, 3 BB), respectively, but four more runs were tallied to give the Texans an 11-0 advantage.Â
In the home half of the second frame, the Dustdevils scored their first run of the game off of Texan starter Tristan Bridges (W, 3-1: 4 IP, H, ER, 5 K, 2 BB) as Heather Ruiz hit a ground ball that allowed Morgan Chavarria to score and trim the deficit to 10 (11-1).Â
Tarleton would add one more run in the top of the fifth inning on Capell's second solo home run of the game to settle the 12-1 run-rule final.
The Dustdevils remain on the road and will play a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-4) on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
