KINGSVILLE, Texas -Â Texas A&M International softball (4-12) split a non-conference doubleheader against No. 15 Texas A&M-Kingsville (12-4) on Saturday.
GAME 1 - TAMUK 10, TAMIU 0
The first game of the doubleheader was all Javelinas as they took the 10-0 decision in a shortened five inning affair. The Javelinas scored at least one run in each of their four at bats.
TAMUK got things started in the first on a RBI groundout to third. They added two more runs in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. The first run scored on a sacrifice fly to right, with the second run scoring on a throwing error by the third baseman. They tacked on another run in the third on a RBI single to left for a 4-0 lead.
The Javelinas put the game away in the bottom of fourth, scoring six runs. The first run scored on a RBI single to short. Two more runs scored on a two RBI single to center. A bases clearing, three RBI double down the left field line gave TAMUK the 10-0 victory.
The Javelinas' Saidi Castillo (7-1) earned the complete game shutout win. TAMIU's Melanie Lint (2-5) took the loss.
GAME 2 - TAMIU 5, TAMUK 3
In the second game of the doubleheader, both starters pitched scoreless frames in the first two innings.
However, the Dustdevils broke the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs. Melanie Gamboa scored on a Shelby Edwards RBI single to left for the first run of the game. Briana Arredondo brought home Kristy Alanis and Morgan Chavarria with a two RBI single to center. Felicity Bernal scored on a Victoria Maldonado RBI double to center. Arrendondo then scored on a sacrifice fly to left from Heather Ruiz for the 5-0 lead.
TAMUK got one run back in the bottom half of third on a sacrifice fly to center to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Javelinas tried to mount a comeback in the sixth inning with two runs, but came up short giving TAMIU the 5-3 victory. One run scored on an RBI double to right center, while the other run scored on a RBI single to left.Â
The Dustdevils' Paige Sasser (2-2) earned the complete game victory. TAMUK's Breanna Smith (4-4) suffered the loss.
TAMIU will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 28 as they travel to Austin, Texas to open Lone Star Conference play in a doubleheader against St. Edward's.
