LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University women's basketball (8-15, 5-12 LSC) dropped a 90-47 Lone Star Conference home decision to the St. Mary's Rattlers (11-10, 10-7 LSC) on Saturday afternoon.
In the opening 4:30, the Rattlers went on a 13-2 run that included 10 points by Hannah Wilson.
St. Mary's stepped on the gas as it scored 12-consecutive points in a span of 1:15 (4:54-3:39). The offensive barrage was both ignited and capped off on a shot from beyond the arc by Briley Perkins to extend its lead to 20 (25-5).
A pair of shots from the charity stripe by Patrycja Jaworska helped the Dustdevils cut the deficit to 17 (28-11) at the end of the first period.
In the second quarter, the Rattlers outscored the Dustdevils 24-8 and took a 34-point lead (52-18) into intermission.
In the third period, the Dustdevils put together a 6-3 run that included layups by Jaworska and Julynne Da Silva Sa along with a pair of shots from the charity stripe by Eva Langton to make it a 57-24 game.
Audrey Wandji and Mya Culver knocked down back-to-back layups to send the 70-30 game to the final quarter.
Although the Dustdevils registered 17 points in the last quarter, Sydney Hardeman's three-pointer extended the Rattler lead to a game-high 46 points (90-44) en route to their 90-47 victory.
TAMIU had a trio of double-digit scorers including Jaworska (3-of-5 FG, 6-of-6 FT), with 13 points, while Nicole Heyn (5-of-6 FT) and Da Silva Sa both tallied 10 points and four rebounds.
Perkins led all scorers with 20 points (7-of-11 FG, 6-of-8 3FG) and Wilson finished with a double-double of 19 points (8-of-10 FG, 3-of-3 FT) and a game-high 10 rebounds to help give the Rattlers the win.
In the end, Texas A&M International shot 24.5 percent (13-of-53) from the field, 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from three-point range and 90.5 percent (19-of-21) from the free-throw line while St. Mary's shot 47.9 percent (34-of-71) from the floor, 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from beyond the arc and 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the charity stripe. The Rattlers held the advantage in rebounds (46-26), steals (17-7), assists (18-6) and blocks (4-1).
The Dustdevils will go back on the road for a LSC matchup on Saturday, Feb. 15 against Texas A&M-Kingsville (4-15, 3-14 LSC) at 2 p.m.
