Dustdevils Split Weekend, Pick Up First Win

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International volleyball opened Lone Star Conference play at home over the weekend. The Dustdevils fell 3-2 in the matchup against Midwestern State (3-7, 1-1 LSC) and then picked up their first win against Cameron (1-11, 0-2 LSC) 3-1.

In the 3-2 loss against Midwestern State on Friday night, TAMIU jumped ahead after a 25-17 set one victory. In sets two and three, the Mustangs won 34-32 and 25-22. The Dustdevils forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-22 victory in set four. In set five, Midwestern State held on to take the victory 15-12.

Senior's Mackenzie Catalina and Sammantha Herrera led the way with 19 kills each, while sophomore Ariana Guerra added 17 kills.

Senior Maison Kosse assisted 53 of the 58 total assists on the night, while sophomore Daniela Sandoval led the way defensively with 22 digs.

TAMIU bounced back, picking up its first victory the season against Cameron the following afternoon, 3-1.

In set one, TAMIU cruised to a 25-14 decision, before taking a close 25-22 second set. Set three, Cameron jumped ahead and went on to win its lone set 25-16. The Dustdevils shut the door in set four, winning 25-16 to seal the victory.

Catalina again led the Dustdevils in kills with 18 on 48 attacks, while Herrera followed with 12. Kosse again was the primary assist specialist, totaling 51 for the match. Sandoval was the defensive standout with 24 digs, joined by Kosse (15), Catalina (14) and senior Deserey Gomez (13) who all ended in double figures.

TAMIU looks to make its victory a win streak, as the Dustdevils take to the court just once this weekend for a 1 p.m. match against Texas A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville, Texas.
